As we were returning from the Prague castle this morning, we came across another film location, loaded with actors dressed for Olympic ceremonies for the upcoming movie The Zookeeper’s Wife. This included a man portraying Jesse Owens.
It was a little surreal to again see a park full of people in 1930’s clothing, antique automobiles and numerous actors with Olympic uniforms for German and US athletes.
A costume person lined up the actors and extras and was straightening out everyone’s medals and uniforms. No cameras were yet in sight, and someone was quickly converting a historic building to some sort of Olympic center, even painting the outside walls and putting in plants.
We have not read the book The Zookeepers Wife, upon which this movie is based, but the “German Zoo” was built to honor the 1936 Berlin Olympics, and later its head raided the Warsaw Zoo, which later became a refuge for Jews fleeing the Nazis.
