We haven’t encountered a lot of Americans, but, of course, they are around, especially with the strong dollar in Europe.
We didn’t get her name but we were joined in our train compartment from Bratislava to Budapest by a 21 year old University of Colorado grad. Her frugal 6-week trip around Europe, which is in its last week was a gift from her parents for graduating a year early.
And, her knowledge and enthusiasm of history, geography and world politics is a good sign for the next generation.
She has been all over northern and eastern Europe traveling on Eurail and staying mostly in youth hostels.
She said her Dad was a member of the White House press corps for the Christian Science Monitor during the Clinton administration, and she, as a literature grad, hoped to follow a boyfriend to DC and get a job as an editor. Greg gave her some advice on how to get a job in the media business.
But the thing that surprised us was that she was traveling alone, and she said she had met many other young women doing the same.
