In front of the royal palace, four gentlemen in red berets and navy blazers, covered with patches and medals, asked us to take their photo.
We saw many similarly outfitted men around the city today.
They explained that they were former “commandos” and paratroopers from the Belgium military, having served from the 1950’s to the 1970’s.
They spoke at length about their service and about similar WWII get-togethers in the region. They said they were having several days of reunions and it included other former service men from other parts of Europe.
We spoke at length, but as we were leaving they gave Regina a bottle of a nice French merlot as a gift. We don’t recall ever meeting a stranger in the US who did that.
