Greg and Sue and their son Damien and his wife Andreea have been to Vienna before. And, they and others they know have all been to Demel chocolate and pastry shop, which describes itself as a purveyor to the Imperial and Royal Court. As should be expected by a chocolatier that’s been in Vienna since 1786.
Demel’s has been in its ornate current location since 1888. They also share claims with the Hotel Sacher to the chocolate Sacher torte that is famous in Austria.
We went twice, once for takeout of several kinds of cakes. Sunday morning, we opted for a second floor table with sofa and had hot chocolate, chocolate mousse cake and apple strudel.
The store has a private museum that is open to tour groups by appointment. But the store itself is much like a museum, with beautiful woodwork and displays. One area allows guests to watch and photograph the chocolate makers in action in their clean kitchen.
