Train travel is a great way to meet people. And, some are characters. First thing Thursday, on the railroad platform in Innsbruck, we were trying not to make eye contact with a very, very short man. But, we were in a small glass enclosed booth on the track, and he introduced himself to us as Roland.
He was heading home to Zurich and spoke perfect English. When the clown college operated in Sarasota, Florida, he said he was there, and he travelled the US with the Barnum and Bailey circus. We aren’t sure why, but he said his boss was famed animal trainer Gunther Gebel-Williams, who used to appear numerous times on the Late Show.
Roland showed us photos of him and his good friend Johnny Depp, as well as his costume when he travelled as the shortest Elvis impersonator in the world. Our train came in, so he didn’t have time to sing for us. But, he called out to us as we hurried to our train that his favorite Elvis song was Suspicious Minds.
